[Newsbriefs] [Alumni Notes] [1996 Reunion] [Q & A] [In Memory of] [Online Form] [Up on the Hill] [Alumni Council] [Online Form] [Contact] [Home]

Dear Alumni,

There has been a change here in Alumni Affairs. After nine years of dedication and hard work, Jessica Lindstrom has left Tandem to work independently as a college counselor and as a free-lance writer for the Knowledge Foundation. I am fortunate enough to be trusted with the task of filling some very big shoes. As a Tandem alumna, I hope to be able to continue the strong work that Jessica has done for the alumni body.

First, what the alumni council set out to do in June of 1995 has been done (please see Up on the Hill). We hope that you share our feeling that Tandem alums have been in greater contact with their school in the last year, not just during fund-raising season. While I will help organize the scholarship telethon in the Spring, my sole focus is keeping in touch with alumni and communicating our concerns to Tandem.

I look forward to an exciting and busy year. There are still many alums who are missing from the school database. Updating the database is a never ending project. Reunion planning for June will begin soon. Meanwhile I'm around, collecting class news, writing for the next newsletter, scouting for alumni events, and eagerly waiting to hear from you all.

    Sincerely,
    Adrienne Johnstone-Taylor
    Alumni Affairs Coordinator
NEWSBRIEFS

The first annual alumni reunion held this past June 8-9, was a success! Attendees from across the country and across the years found their way back up the hill for lunch, music, drama, and fun with other Tandem graduates. See the complete story. We've got pictures!!

Recently, the Charlottesville press caught several Tandem alums hard at work. The June 27-July 3 issue of the Charlottesville - Albemarle Observer featured an article on the growth of the after hours music scene on the downtown mall. Bill Maisannes '87 and Mark Hineline '88 talked with the Observer about their group The High Plains Drifters: "A recent Thursday finds them on the Mall picking out Old Time Bluegrass, trading mandolin for guitar and passing the banjo between songs." The two have been practicing together for over a year and are "ready to seek gigs in local coffee shops and bars...."

Alumni Council member Heather Burns '84 is on a mission to seek out and develop local writing talent, according to a recent article in the C'ville Weekly (August 20-26). She and three other local writers have created the Charlottesville Writing Center. Beginning with seven weeks of night classes at the Village School, the group hopes to gauge local interest in such a group and to find a permanent home for the Center.

Tandem steers onto the information superhighway! I'm sure many of us remember that Tandem lagged a little in providing the latest in technology for student and faculty use. Although a couple of computers at Tandem remain a Window-less environment where WordPerfect 5.1 is the program of choice, the front office, Development Office and, yes, the Tandem Computer Lab are equipped with Macintosh computers that run the latest wordprocessing software. No more dot matrix for this place; Tandem even has laser jet printers!

Travel down to the Chemics room where students and faculty can access the World Wide Web. Here students research and explore hundreds of educational and informational sites. The next time you are cruising on the information superhighway, check out the at Tandem Web Site at http://monticello.avenue.gen.va.us/Ed/Tandem/. Tandem Alum Jamie Sullivan '96 designed the web pages for his senior project. The site is currently maintained by Physics instructor and computer lab guru Lisa Beazell. At the Tandem site you can visit the Lounge, check the current Academic Calender, and view student art. You can also check out links to the home pages of three Tandem graduates, Tabb Sullivan '93, Jamie Sullivan (yes, they are brothers), and Julia (Jenny) Hayden '90 [web address updated, 2/98].

In the future, we hope to add pages especially for alumni, possibly including the bi-annual newsletter on the site. This is an awesome task to undertake. Any alumni who feel confident in their ability to use this Internet thing should contact Alumni Affairs to volunteer their brave souls.[done]

It was just another ordinary April day at Tandem until Michael Kelley '74 stopped by. His jazz band, The Hot House Quartet, was in Charlottesville and treated current students, faculty, and several alumni to a private concert. Students danced the sunny afternoon away on the back lawn.

From the October 3-9 Charlottesville-Albemarle Observer: "Ya gotta love 'em. The co-ed middle school soccer team at Tandem Friends School on Route 20 South sports a goalie in a tie-dyed shirt and blue bandana headpiece. Then, after a home field victory last week, the whole team danced the Macarena at midfield to the beat of a big boom box. Boogie on, gang!"

1st Annual June Alumni Reunion!

Some Class of 1981 Folks
Rob, Liz, Thomas (with Katie), Coleman and Bill (with Madeline), from the Class of '81

And was it a success? You bet it was! On Saturday, old and new alumni gathered at graduation to see the seniors' entertaining Mission Impossible-esque entrance. After the ceremony, alumni purchased bumper stickers and t-shirts (still on sale), flipped through the pages of the Commemorative Booklet (also, still on sale) and shared refreshments and cake, arranged by faculty member Nancy Summers.

Saturday night, a large group of alumni gathered to tour Charlottesville night spots. This event was independent of the reunion itself (ahem!) and Tandem does not accept responsibility for the good time had by all.

Sunday was rainy and overcast, moving the day's activities inside. Lunch was followed by an open discussion with school head Rosalyn Berne. The discussion focused on Tandem's new affiliation with the Quaker Friends Council. Many alumni expressed some degree of concern with the change. Rosalyn clarified the "new" direction the school is taking and attempted to allay any fears of radical change (Tandem alums afraid of change?!). Some alums expressed their support for the transition, while others remain wary of what changes Quaker affiliation may bring to our school. In this edition of In Tandem, the new Q&A column focuses on Tandem as a Friends School. The column examines from current student and administration perspective part of what Matilda, Heather, Kate and Daphne Quaker affiliation means for Tandem. This discussion will continue and I hope that some level of communication between Tandemites old and new will help clarify what Tandem Friends School is today.

The discussion session was followed by a presentation of drama and music. Students performed monologues from their Spring production "What if God Was One of Us?" Each monologue was followed by a musical interlude or performance by the Tandem Chorus.

Alumni walked the grounds around Tandem into the early evening, checking out the Wall of Respect, the construction of the new Community Hall (scheduled for use this winter!), the Lounge, and the Kitchen. Throughout the afternoon, we all took part in a little nostalgic musing about how Tandem has changed, yet how much it remains the same.

This 1997 reunion is scheduled for the weekend of June 7. This year we would really like to focus on getting the 5, 10, 15, and 20 year classes at reunion (that's 1992, 1987, 1982, and 1977 in case your math is slow like mine). If you are the class rep for these years, be on the lookout for much poking and prodding to rally your classmates to the event. Put it on your calenders now and plan to be there. The format will be similar to last year. We would, however, like to add class parties, and an expanded dinner event, perhaps with goods and services (food, beverage, and music) provided by alums. Interested? You've got our number!
