Alumni Newsletter Spring 1997

Dear Alumni,

-- The light bulb joke aside, one of the many concerns alumni seem to share is that of Tandem's changing physical plant. The new Community Hall is already in place and an athletic field house is in the works. Tandem's little plot on the hill seems smaller and smaller as the Willow Lake housing development creeps down the ridge. As I write this, the bulldozers turn the red clay up on itself, preparations for the new county road moving through the woods. Within a couple of years, the bells at Jefferson High School will be heard through the surrounding trees. It is a little scary to smell the burning of trees and know that the rest of the world has finally found us tucked up on this mountain. However, I am writing this to allay some fears, not to encourage them. Tandem has worked hard to hold on to the land and will continue through landscaping (and beautifying) the grounds we have. Take a look through these pages. Details on the construction are inside (see Q&A). I also included a copy of an article from Tandem's newspaper The Evergreen in which the author expresses concern over similar construction. The article was written in 1973! For anyone with real concern, I recommend a quick phone call or a trip up here to see for yourself.

-- I hope to see many of you at reunion.

    Sincerely,
    Adrienne Johnstone-Taylor
    Alumni Affairs Coordinator

The Fall 1996 edition of Pinwheel (newsletter of the University of Virginia's Children's Medical Center) featured an article on Tandem alumna Kelly Munger '96. The article follows Kelly through challenge and triumph right up to her enrollment at Randolph-Macon Women's College last Fall. Kelly was diagnosed with cerebral palsy at 15 months. Because of early intervention and a long relationship with the professionals at Kluge Children's Rehabilitation Center (KCRC), Kelly cites KCRC as, Quot;an extremely important part of my life." Jan Allaire, Kelly's speech therapist of many years, calls Kelly, "an inspiration to many people."

Almost Vegetarian Diana Shaw's ('76) cookbook, Almost Vegetarian, was featured in the Quality Paperback Book Club's latest mailing. Former faculty member Jessica Lindstrom reports that her mother bought the book and, "says it's great!" [ Buy this book! Tandem could get 15%]

Back in November, The Daily Progress featured a front page article on the Virginia Institute for Autism (VIA), an independent school, founded by the parents of several autistic children in the area. Among the parents are Alison Hormel Webb '74 and her husband Bernie Webb. The couple has two children enrolled at the school, six-year-old Harry and four-year-old Georgia. The teachers at the school use a modified version of the Lovaas approach, developed at the University of California. Another of the institute's founding parents, Daniel Cattell-Gordon, hopes that VIA will one day, "be seen as a valid alternative that will serve as a bridge to make public school programs for autistic children successful." Says Alison Hormel Webb, "our goal is recovery - total recovery."

On Sunday, March 9, The Daily Progress featured a front page article on the "children of Yogaville." Several of the featured individuals attended Tandem in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Gopal Metro '94, Sean Schoonover '93, and Vimala Nichols '90 talked about many aspects of growing up in the unique ashram located in nearby Buckingham County.

Tandem has not typically been known as a sports powerhouse. But don't tell that to the boys and girls of the Tandem middle school basketball team. The team was featured in the February 13-19 edition of The Charlottesville and Albemarle Observer. This recent article highlights the team's undefeated season and focuses on the school's quest for a new field house, in the hopes that the team won't have to practice outside next year. The secret to Tandem's success seems to be the dedication of both the players and coach Gordon Fields, a man who educates the players about basketball. He often, "discusses with his players NBA and college games that they have seen on TV, examining plays and coaching decisions." Tandem middle school basketball seems to have found the winning formula.
