Featured: Listen to the NPR Story Program Treats Addicts in Health Care by Patricia Murphy, June 11, 2008.

Questions to consider:

  • What constitutes a diagnosis of addiction to alcohol or other drugs?
  • How do I help someone I know get appropriate help?
  • What are the legal issues when a health care professional has a problem?
  • What resources are available for educating my staff?
  • What is a Peer Assistance Program?
  • How do I interview a therapist, counselor, treatment program?
  • Who in my area is established as competent and successful at treatment?
  • What is an Advocate?
  • What are the costs?

If you are concerned about someone you love or work with or for there is something you can do.

Health Practitioners' Intervention Programs

Some states have Health Practitioners' Intervention Programs which provide appropriate referral, a possible stay of disciplinary action, monitoring and advocacy.

The Commonwealth of Virginia has such a program, as does Pennsylvania, Florida, Western Michigan, and others. Contact me at Hannahlloyd@mac.com for informaton and referral to these advocacy systems.
