Common Birds of Louisiana
1978 edition, Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries,
Baton Rouge.
PREFACE
This booklet was first published in 1941. Mrs. Hewes wrote it
as though she were talking to the children in person. In this edition,
we have endeavored to bring it up to date without changing the tone
or essence of her work. It was never intended to be a technical book
for serious ornithologists, but rather an aid to children and adults
that are interested in birds. Some of the photographs and drawings
may appear to look old, but we feel that this enhances the book and
fits in with the timeless quality that makes it so charming.

INTRODUCTION
In recent years Louisiana citizens have become very interested
in the conservation of wild birds.
The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, realizing
that conservation is principally a matter of education, has endeavored
in this book to present a description of some of our birds so that
teachers and their pupils might obtain some much needed information.
S. Elizabeth Hewes
